President Barzani Thanks U.S. Congressmen for Resolution to Establish Consulate in Erbil

Salahaddin, Kurdistan Region , Iraq (KRP.org) – Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani received U.S. Congressman and Chairman of the Kurdish American Congressional Caucus Lincoln Davis and Representative Brian Baird in Salahaddin today to discuss bilateral relations between the U.S. and the Kurdistan Region.

The two Congressmen, accompanied by Senior Advisor to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Alan Misenhiemer, said they are in the Kurdistan Region in recognition and appreciation for the friendship of the people of the Kurdistan Region toward the U.S. government and people.

President Barzani thanked the Congressmen for their visit and said that such visits are important to strengthen this relationship. He also talked about the fact that no single U.S. soldier has been killed or even wounded since the 2003 war in the Kurdistan Region. This is a sign of the friendship and appreciation of our people to the United States, he said.

The President also thanked Representative Lincoln Davis for his role in the approval of the House Resolution 873 calling for the establishment of US Consulate in the Kurdistan Region.

“…the Kurds of Iraq have been willing partners with the U.S. in the democratic transition in Iraq since 2003, and the Kurdistan Region has served as a model of Iraq ‘s democratization since Operation Iraqi Freedom. The establishment of a United States consulate in the Kurdistan Region will demonstrate a U.S. commitment to maintaining and building upon the success and stability of this prosperous and democratic Iraqi region,” reads the resolution, which was approved by the House last week.

President Barzani also shared his views about the ongoing efforts to form a new government in Baghdad . He said the winning lists from the Kurdistan Region have one negotiation team ready to visit Baghdad for talks.

“We believe that all the main winning blocks must be included in the next government, and that no community should be left out from the government. As soon as the election results are certified by the Supreme Court, our negotiation team will visit Baghdad and enter talks with the other winning lists,” said the President.
